If you took a stroll around Norwich’s Lanes today you may have encountered sweet wafts of loveliness luring your senses towards this little gem:
I popped into Figbar this morning to say hello. They’ve literally only just opened today (5th July) but you wouldn’t believe it. As you walk through the door you instantly feel as though you’ve stumbled upon a seasoned establishment and the best-kept secret in Norwich all at once. It sits very comfortably here in the heart of the Maddermarket.
Purveyors of all things sweet, Figbar is a dessert bar, coffee house and socializing spot that puts our fine city on the map.
Run by a friend of a friend, Jamie and his lovely wife Stephanie, bring with them a CV that’s difficult to top. Between them they have a Michelin restaurant pedigree, a PhD and a collection of published poetry. My kinda dream team: Food and writing – poetry in motion.
Jaime brings to Figbar an impressive pastry background including positions held with Marcus Wareing and Gordon Ramsay at multi-Michelin-starred Pétrus, Galton Blackiston and Richard Bainbridge at Michelin-starred Morston Hall, and Yotam Ottolenghi and Sami Tamimi in their flagship Islington Restaurant Ottolenghi.
Originally from Norwich many moons ago, Jamie has returned to bring this wealth of pastry skills back to his roots. And oh boy, am I pleased about that.
With a stunning ceiling light feature, wood counter finishes, convivial surroundings, piles of daily baked goodies including all manner of lovely things: Gianduja chocolate brownies with an oozing middle (guys, seriously, what are you doing to me?), croissants, brioche pretzels, cinnamon rolls, pain au chocolate, inside out bagels, homemade hot chocolate, pretzel chocolate cookies (oh my!), granola bars, cake and more cake, gluten-free cake, sausage rolls, coffees, plated desserts and did I mention cake? And that’s not all.
Thursdays to Saturdays Figbar will be open in the evenings too, offering the top-notch desserts you’d expect from a Michelin chef along with fine wines, Champagne and craft beers.
Figbar is a modern meeting place, where pre-theatre pick-me-ups shine and first dates don’t have to end. I couldn’t have said it better myself.
